Chelsea Moves Up the UEFA Champions League Rankings
A well-earned 2-0 victory over AC Milan has helped Chelsea rise to the top of Group E in the ranks of the UEFA Champions League.
The match took place at a packed San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy on Tuesday, 11 October.
The game got off to a rocky start, as the Blues were given a penalty just 17 minutes in. Milan defender Fikayo Tomori was unhappy with the proceedings and earned himself a red card one minute later due to his aggressive obstruction.
A verbal disagreement ensued between the two teams as the players struggled to agree on whether referee Daniel Siebert’s decision was warranted.
In return, both sides received a metaphorical slap on the wrist as Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Milan striker Olivier Giroud were both handed yellow cards.
The English club snatched the first goal of the match at the 21-minute mark, thanks to midfielder Jorginho as he claimed the penalty kick.
Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the fate of the game in the 34th minute as he scored the second goal, with an assist from his team-mate Mount.
Stefano Pioli, manager of the Italian team, was clearly unhappy with the result during the post-match media briefing, saying: “I told the referee what I think, I don’t speak English very well but I think he understood.”
